We had a great day exploring this area. Our first stop was a sod house that the Ingalls family could have built and lived in. We explored the Badlands with their totally unusual formations. The rattlesnake warning signs were enough to keep us from hiking as well as the temperatures that reached 99 degrees. The pioneers really had a hard life trying to survive here. Kenny, our cowboy host, says you need 20 acres for each cattle to survive.
We headed west on country roads towards Mount Rushmore. A real tourist place with the little town at its entrance being a total shrine to tourists. Could not get through it quickly enough. We joined a tour being given by a park ranger and got to see the carvings from a different angle and hear the story of its creation and the history of each of the presidents and why they were chosen. Then we headed down the mountain on super curvy and narrow Iron Mountain Road with four one way tunnels. It was beautiful. When you come through one of the tunnels Mount Rushmore appears in front of you.
